NGO OneMama and Delegates Adapt New Strategies Amidst Cancellation of the 2020 CSW64

As an ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organization (NGO), OneMama is proud to have 2020 be the first year we can bring our own delegates to the United Nations CSW64 world stage. As OneMama and her delegates race to prepare to bring lasting change to the United Nations global CSW stage, One Mother Earth had different plans.

With CSW64 and the Beijing+25 UN events planned for March 9th-20th, 2020, the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused the cancellation of all CSW New York parallel events.

OneMama delegates are loyal and optimistic through the ups and downs surrounding this unprecedented state of affairs that are no doubt going to cause strain on the work OneMama does. We are excited to ride the motivation leading up to the CSW in order to continue our work towards lasting change on a global scale and in conformity with the 2020 CSW themes.

What is the CSW64?

CSW is the Commission on the Status of Women, an event in which thousands of activists from civil society organizations around the world come to the United Nations headquarters in New York. This is the global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. 2020 marks the 64 session of the CSW.

The CSW continues to be a ground-breaking gathering to promote women’s rights. Importantly, it brings together world-leaders to change global policies regarding the treatment of women around the world.

The priority themes for 2020 are “Realizing gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.”

What is the Beijing+25?

In 2020, the global community will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995). A five-year milestone will be reached towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was an important historical milestone for all women globally bringing attention to women’s concerns and recognizing women as equal partners in policy development. It reaffirmed that women’s rights are human rights and that women need to enjoy equal rights and opportunities with men in order to create sustainable and just societies.

On the international scale, the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action had a significant impact, but further action is crucial to ensure gender-responsive strategies, gender based-research, practices, guiding principles, and continuously considered public and private sector operations.

OneMama’s Work Under Beijing+25

This is where OneMama has taken an initiative to make a difference for the communities we serve. OneMama Incorporated operates in the East Africa member state Uganda and in the United States, partnering with consultative NGO Women’s Intercultural Network (WIN) that adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action as a framework for grassroots organizing in California and in Uganda.

We have witnessed a significant win for women in our United States operating municipality of San Francisco, California with the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as a city-wide ordinance in 1998. The implementation brought women closer to equality by requiring gender analysis of government departments and creating the Gender Equality Principles Initiative (GEP Initiative).

These tools adopted the human rights lens, helping to prevent discrimination and integrate gender considerations into daily operations first within the city departments and more recently in the private sector.

Each year, OneMama takes this incredible opportunity to be the voice for the women at the OneMama Health Center and for women around the world. We are thrilled each year to partner with the UN, our DPI partners, and now the newly appointed OneMama delegates. Through our partnerships and consultative status, OneMama can amplify the voices of our villagers to a global stage. This year, despite the cancellation of the CSW64 events, we push to find new ways to share our voice and continue the fight for lasting change!
